:::::I haven't had anything to say yet (except that I really like the table so far), but talking about screencaps: Is a sub category with the page name really necessary? Usually there are 1-2 screencaps on a page, I don't really remember more than that, so does it make sense to add categories only for single screencaps? Or is this important for the organisation? I'm still confused about categories, that's actually one of the reason I didn't have anything to say, yet. --[[User:Uzumi|Uzumi]] ([[User talk:Uzumi|talk]]) 01:47, 11 August 2014 (BST)

Proposed category cleanup

I'm going to be blunt with this: I don't like how categories are being used on the Wiki. Our categories need to be organized, thorough, and efficient. Currently however, our categories are awkward and incomplete, full of inconsistencies, and lack a greater sense of organization. The Categories on the PF1 Wiki are great examples of what we need, they'd be diffrent, of course, but they provide excellent frameworks we can build on. Here are some guidelines I think will be helpful:

  1. The name of a category needs to be concise and short, but still be able to clearly explain what belongs inside of it. Long titles take longer to read and process, we need to limit unnecessary information as much as we can.
    • Image categories need to have "(Image)" in the title, preferable placed at the end (placement can be discussed).
  2. Each time an page is added to a category, the edit summary should explain why that page belongs in a category. This should help figuring out what pages belong in which categories.
  3. Categories Pages should be made before Wiki Pages are added to it. This should help prevent editors from making unnecessary categories, and wasting time adding pages to them. If a category is not needed, it should be deleted.
  4. Pages should not be a part of more than 3 categories. The most specific categories should be used in cases were more than 3 apply.
  5. Use the Talk pages. If you need help on a specific page, or just need opinions on something, use a wiki talk page. Be sure to check other talk pages before you open a new one, as your issue might have already been answered. Don't be afraid to open new Talk pages.

There needs to be a large category cleanup done for the Wiki, but I need opinions on the most efficient way to do it. I'm currently moving, so I'm stuck on mobile, so no major edits will be done by me for a few days. Hopefully we'll get this issue sorted by the time I can use more than an iPad. Comments and feedback would be amazing, thank you. (I choose this page because it's one of the categories that needs work, although this one, not every much.) -signed, KingVesper (talk)

Perfect timing, I was looking through the Recent Changes and thought the same thing. I agree with all of your points and would be happy to help along, albeit it will be difficult if only one person does so as the category cleanup would become biased and other editors may disagree with the changes to names and categories. If we can compile a list of categories and what they contain we can all agree on one set format or naming criteria so that categories follow a homogeneous pattern. A point I may bring up after looking over the categories used on other wikis is the fact that many categories (if not all) are in plural, so "(Image)" may be rephrased to "(Images)". I have a section below with a basic list of image categories I believe we should keep. Discussion is encouraged. Note an asterisk is used as a wildcard; the use of it should be easily determinable. -Lugia101101 (talk) 13:08, 30 July 2014 (BST)
Thank you, so much. I agree that there should be more than one editor deciding on where pages should be put, that's only fair. The change to "(Images)" is fine, I thought that was what I had originally written, my apologizes on that. Your table looks lovely, that's basically what I had in mind for the image categories. The page categories can be figured out once we have stable pages, hopefully that won't take long now that we have an official Wiki team.
Categories like "Party Summary" need to be changed as well. Perhaps having a category made for screencaps, like the Category:Basic Mechanics (Images), but for all screencaps. We can then get more specific, adding them to subcategories to show the pages on PFQ that were taken from. Should we consider adding a "(Screencaps)" title on categories mostly made up of screencaps? Although, no all images in these categories will be screencaps, so this may cause some confusion. Maybe if we use a different title for these kinds of categories? I don't know though; I'm a little on the fence with this. Oh, and before forget, we need a category for the NPC images too. -signed KingVesper (talk) 04:25, 31 July 2014 (BST)
If we're going to define what is in the category, such as (Images) or (Screencaps), I'd say we'd have to ban all other types from the category, just to make everything clear. With things like Category:Party Summary, a subcategory may help to contain all of the screen shots, simply adding the (Screencaps) suffix may suffice, but if you can think of something else that would work, go right ahead. I added the NPC Image category to the list too. If you have any suggestions or additions, just go right ahead and add them, since in the end the table will have been changed and discussed until a unanimous vote is reached. -Lugia101101 (talk) 10:31, 31 July 2014 (BST)
Sorry for the delayed response, my internet provider is terriable and I've been without internet for over two weeks now. But I agree with what you've said, it would make things easier and much more organized. I think one large category named something along "PFQ Screencaps (Images)" with subcategories for the actual Screencaps, named after the PFQ pages they were taken from, might work nicely.
Hopefully we'll hear feedback from someone else, but if no one does, we are both Wiki Editors, and I think both of us being in complete agreement with the categories on the table (once we finish it), will be enough. I won't be able to help until I can get a stable internet connection (probably Tuesday), so hopefully someone will join the conversation by then. - signed, KingVesper (talk) 01:37, 10 August 2014 (BST)
